The analysis and visual results of the thermal runaway of the tight nickel-cadmium accumulators НКБН-25-УЗ

Having analyzed the energy balance of the thermal runaway it was shown that the thermal runaway is not due to an external source of current but due to powerful internal self-accelerating exothermal reaction. And this reaction takes place in quite accidental spots of the electrode starting from a point and spreading radially like in the process of burning.

Hydrogen accumulation in nickel-cadmium accumulators and the process of thermal runaway

Through the thermal decomposition it was shown that in electrodes of nickel-cadmium accumulators having long periods of operation there is a great amount of hydrogen. For example, in the accumulator НКБН-25-УЗ having a five year's period of operation there are approximately 805 litres of hydrogen.

Investigation of the Causes of Thermal Run-away in Sealed Nickel-Cadmium Batteries

It is shown from analysis of charging current and voltage change on the terminals of sealed Ni-Cd battery at thermal runaway, that thermal runaway is accompanied by a new high-power electrochemical reaction, going at battery voltage of approximately 0.55 V.

Thermal runaway in nickel-cadmium batteries with sintered and extruded electrodes

It is shown by experiments that probability of thermal runway in nickel-cadmium batteries with sintered oxide-nickel electrodes is higher, than in the batteries with extruded and pasted electrodes. Besides, it is shown that the probability of thermal runaway decreases with decrease of battery capacitance.
